Dear Parent,

Thank you for the delicious dish you helped your child make (purchased) for the Diversity Heritage Day celebration. It was a huge success! Thank you so much for your contribution. This week is ISAT testing week and there will be no homework or study hall. We are off to the Oak Park Lake theatre, Friday March 5, 2010 to view the movie Alice in Wonderland. What a great way to end the ISAT testing week! Please make sure you send the permission slip and the $8.00 cost in a sealed envelope with your child's name on it by March 3, 2010. Below is a message from the school nurse regarding the walking field trip Friday March 5, 2010.

Asthmatics need to be extra careful walking in the cold.
Also, especially if the temperature is below freezing with or without wind chill factor.....I have noticed at dismissal at the bus area that in general many of the students are not wearing appropriate outer wear, some walking, some on the bus. This is just my suggestion, that they are given a reminder the day before to bring coat/gloves or consequence is remaining behind at school. If they do not have proper cover the day of the FT I would have a parent give verbal permission over phone that they are aware of the outside temperature and that their child does not have coat/gloves etc & can walk the distance without appropriate clothing under your supervision for weather conditions.

Diversity Heritage Day - Celebrating Diversity with Food Art, Music, Poetry and Dance

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On February 26, 2010, the Social Studies class will have a special event to celebrate diversity in the classroom. We will celebrate diversity with art, food, music, poetry and dance. This will be a chance for students to share and celebrate their background and heritage with classmates. I would like to invite parents and /or other family members to join us to share a cultural connection with the class. This may be information about your cultural background such as the country, its music, dance, dress, food, art and recreation your family comes from. If you like, you may even plan a brief activity for the class to take part in. You will have only about five minutes to present. The morning classes are only about 40 minutes long and the afternoon classes are longer.

After we share our unique cultural experiences, we will hold our Diversity Heritage Food Festival in the classroom. I am asking each student to bring in a ready-to-serve dish related to his or her family-background. Keep it simple and easy to serve. We are unable to heat any foods, so foods served cold or at room temperature are best. Please label each dish with your name, include any necessary serving utensils, plates, napkins and the receipt to share with others. Please do not send a dish made from or cooked with peanuts or peanut oil. Please encourage your child to check the recipes for ingredients before sampling any of the dishes. I will also encourage them to do so during class. Students and guest will be able to sample appetizers, breads, cookies, desserts, and other foods of different cultures. I hope to see you there!

Chapter 10 Activity Bank A Changing Nation

Directions: Read each activity below and select one activity to complete. A one page typed essay; double-spaced paper, size 12 fonts, and / or visual are required for each activity. This is not a group activity. Your essay and/or visual will be due February 22, 2010. You are required to do research and please remember to include a works cited page.

Historians
Research the major events and issues related to Andrew Jackson’s life and career. Create an Andrew Jackson board game. Trace the rise of Jackson from poor beginnings on the western frontier to popular military hero and president.
Researching States’ Rights
Research and list the events in which states clashed with the federal government during Jackson’s years in office. Make a chart showing these issues and explain why they are important.

Connecting With Economic
In the Panic of 1837, about 600 U.S. banks closed. Research the Panic of 1837 and compare it to the United States economy today. Write a report to explain your findings.

Connecting With Geography
Research the Trail of Tears and follow the two routes the Cherokees took from their homeland in north - west Georgia to eastern Okalahoma. Make a map showing the two routes and identify the present day states the Cherokees crossed. Research the kind of terrain and climate the Cherokees endured during their ordeal. Write an essay to explain your findings.

Citizens
Research the Nullification Crisis and The Indian Removal Act and pretend you are a citizen who lived in the 1830s. Write a letter giving a personal reaction to Jackson’s stand on the Nullification Crisis and the Indian Removal Act.

Eyewitness Journal
Research one of the following groups during the 1830s. Pretend you are a frontier settler, a Whig politician, a Southern planter, an enslaved African American or a Seminole. In your Eyewitness Journal, record how key events and issues of the Jackson era affect your life.

Artists
Search the internet to research sites dealing with Cherokee culture and history. Continue exploring until you find Cherokee viewpoints on the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears. Write a poem; create a cartoon and painting about how people suffered on the Trail of Tears. Write an essay explaining the Cherokee viewpoints.

Chapter 9 Activity Bank The Era of Thomas Jefferson

Directions: Read each activity below and select one activity to complete. A one page typed essay; double-spaced paper, size 12 fonts, and / or visual are required for each activity. This is not a group activity. Your essay and/or visual will be due January 29, 2010. You are required to do research and please remember to include a works cited page.

Exploring Civics: Create a chart comparing the different ideas of the federalists and republicans during the Age of Jefferson. Include categories such as ideas about democracy, economic policy, military policy, and foreign policy.

Political Leaders: Write a persuasive speech supporting or opposing war with Britain in 1812. The purpose of the speech is to persuade listeners to agree with your point of view.

Creating a Poster: “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists,” said President Jefferson. Create a poster describing and illustrating four goals you think all Americans should agree on, regardless of their political party.

Internet Activity: Use the internet to find information about current or recent U. S. embargoes. In a written report, describe two of these modern embargoes and the reason for each. Explain whether or not each has been successful.

Eyewitness Journal: You are a War Hawk in Congress or a Native American at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, or a British solider attacking Washington, D.C., or an American solider at New Orleans. In your Eyewitness Journal, record your participation in and feelings about the War of 1812.

Nationalism: Describe two events or developments that caused many Americans to become more nationalistic during the Age of Jefferson

Marshall and the Judiciary/ Marbury v. Madison: Write an essay answering the following questions. How did John Marshall influence the federal court system? How did the case Marbury v. Madison establish the principle of judicial review? How did Marshall help create a balance of power among the three branches of government?

Welcome to a new school year and to Team 7-2. I hope you had a wonderful summer and you are looking forward to a great school year.
