Title of Lesson Plan: American Civil War Video Taped Television News Broadcast

Major Themes/Concepts: You will learn about the causes of the Civil War, the war itself and how the American Civil War was a political, economic and social turning point. Then you will present your findings as a group in a video taped television news broadcast.

Introduction/Anticipatory Set:
You are a member of the U.S. Broadcast team, living in the Civil War era. Battles are raging all around you: brother pitted against brother; father against son; state against state. The golden meadows and rolling hills you and your friends once played in are being soaked in crimson with the blood of a nation’s most valued resource: its citizenry. What was once a courageous new union is now being torn apart before your eyes.

The unit covering the American Civil War will culminate with a video taped television news broadcast. You will be asked to watch local news broadcasts during the previous days to come up with a framework for your video presentation. Class time will be used to discuss your findings and layout of broadcast.

Material/Resources
You will also be given a project assignment sheet and rubrics.
The video camera will be available before and after school. Students must sign up in advance so I can check the equipment out and plan to stay with them.
